Due to March 11, 2011’s earthquake and tsunami, as well as the problems that have followed, foreign residents of Fukushima, Ibaraki, Iwate, Miyagi, and Tochigi prefectures may have left Japan before being able to apply for re-entry permits or may not be able to return to Japan before their current visa expires.
Residents of these five prefectures will therefore be allowed as a special consideration to apply for a re-entry permits and visa extensions in Japanese Embassies and Consulates overseas.
Additionally, residents of the above five prefectures who have stayed in Japan but left their prefectures can apply for the same services at the Tokyo or Yokohama Immigration offices.
Residents of other Japanese prefectures are asked to continue to use the immigration offices in their own areas.
