His Excellency First Vice President General Abdul Rashid Dostum

His Excellency Vice President General Abdul Rashid Dostum took the oath of allegiance administered by His Excellency President Ashraf Ghani on the 29th of September 2014. H.E. General Dostum was born in 1952 in Khwaja Du Koh in Jowzjan Province. H.E. General Dostum played a significant role after the defeat of the invading Soviet Union and in 1992 founded the National Islamic Movement of Afghanistan political party, which he remains the leader of to the present day.

In 2003, after serving as a Deputy Defense Minister in the national government, H.E. General Dostum became the Chief of Staff to the Commander in Chief of the Afghan National Army, a position that H.E. later left but which He was reappointed to in June 2009. During the 2009 Presidential Elections, H.E. played a prominent role in publicly supporting H.E. former President Hamid Karzai in his successful campaign for reelection. During the country’s 2014 Presidential Election, H.E. General Dostum was chosen by the then Presidential candidate H.E. Ashraf Ghani to run with him in the position of First Vice President. H.E. General Dostum is married and has four sons and four daughters.
