His Excellency Dr. Abdullah Abdullah is the Chief Executive Officer of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. H.E. Chief Executive Officer Abdullah was sworn into office on September 29, 2014. In 1960, H.E. Abdullah was born in Kabul. His father, Ghulam Mahyyoddin Zmaryalay, was a Senator in the final years of the rule of the Father of the Nation His Majesty King Mohammad Zahir Shah.

H.E. Chief Executive Officer Abdullah completed his elementary education at Ghazi Mohammad Ayub Khan School and graduated from Naderia High School in Kabul in 1976. He then studied ophthalmology at Kabul University’s Department of Medicine and graduated a Doctor of Medicine in 1983.

After achieving his degree, H.E. worked as a doctor of medicine, including serving as an ophthalmologist at Noor Eye Institute in Kabul. In 1984, H.E. went to Pakistan to care for Afghan refugee families at the Syed Jamaluddin Afghani Eye Hospital and later at the Ophthalmology Hospital, both in Peshawar, Pakistan. From 1985 to 1992, H.E. worked as advisor to the late Ahmad Shah Massoud.

From 1992 to 1996, H.E. Chief Executive Officer Abdullah was the Chief of Staff and also the Spokesman for the Defense Ministry and became the Deputy Foreign Minister in 1997. From 1999 to 2001, H.E. was the acting Minister of Foreign Affairs. After the fall of the Taliban regime until April 2005, H.E. served as the Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. H.E. Chief Executive Officer Abdullah is married and has three daughters and one son. H.E. is fluent in Dari, Pashto, and English, and can also communicate well in Arabic and French.
