English | 日本語 Marking The 20th Anniversary of the Withdrawal of the Former Soviet ForcesKABUL, Feb 14 (Quqnoos): Today, February 14th, is the 20th anniversary of the withdrawal of the former Soviet Union troops. The last unit of the red army troops left Afghanistan on the same day over the Hairatan Bridge in the north. February 14th is one of the proudest and most memorable days in national history. Soviet troops invaded with fighter jets and heavy artillery in 1979. Despite some analysts believing that the Soviet Union was the greatest military power in the world at the time, the Soviets suffered heavy casualties during the nine-year long war and hundreds of Soviet arms were also destroyed or handed over to Mujahidden. |
