Ministry satisfied with arrangements for ECO summit

Kabul, September 18, 2007 (Pajhwok Afghan News): Officials at the Foreign Ministry Tuesday said security situation was satisfactory for holding summit of the Economic Cooperation Organisation (ECO) in the western province of Herat.

The ministry's spokesman Sultan Ahmad Bahin told Pajhwok Afghan News preparations were underway to arrange accommodation and other necessary facilities for the delegates from member countries.

The summit, scheduled to be held in October this year, will be attended by Foreign Ministers from 10 member countries of the organisation.

"Security forces in Herat had assured us of foolproof security during the summit and there will be no problem," the spokesman contended. He said the commission responsible for preparations for the summit had started work in Herat as well as at the Foreign Ministry in Kabul.

The Economic Cooperation Organisation (ECO) was established in 1985 by Turkey, Iran and Pakistan. Its membership has now reached 10. The other seven members included Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan.
