Germany to increase aid to AfghanistanKabul, March 1, 2007 (People’s Daily Online): Germany will increase its financial aid to Afghanistan from 80 million euros (about 100 million U.S. dollars) to 100 million euros (125 million U.S. dollars) a year, a German minister said on Wednesday. The two governments will discuss how to use the extra 20 million euros, said German Economic Cooperation and Development Minister Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul. The German government believed it is better to use the extra money on projects, such as the education of young girls, in southern Afghanistan, said Wieczorek-Zeul. Germany had promised 80 million euros in aid each year to Afghanistan from 2001 to 2010. Berlin also forgave all 44 million U.S. dollars of the Afghan debt. |
